Commissioner Noack and his advisory council compiled of area leaders met on Monday evening to discuss a collection of business matters ongoing in Montgomery County.
Noack invited Montgomery County Animal Shelter Director Charles Jackson to address the changes that have been made during his first 40 days as well as his plan moving forward. Jackson explained that during his first 40 days they have been able to save 91 percent of animals leaving the shelter. This was made possible by assistance from the community, fosters and rescue groups. The “Home for the Holidays” promotion was able to provide about 605 free adoptions in just 30 days thanks to generous residents sponsoring the adoption fees.
Jackson touched on his business-minded approach to running the shelter. “The animal shelter is a people business,” said Jackson. “If you think in terms of how is this going to help out our customer and how is this going to help promote our product then you will have a good animal shelter.”
Jackson’s background serving in the United States Air Force also plays a huge role in the way he manages day-to-day operations at the shelter. He stressed the importance of bringing the same core values he learned through his time in service to the shelter, which is integrity, service before self and to practice excellence in everything that they do.
Commissioner Noack later opened up the floor for discussing opinions on the Texas 249 project as well as his plan to nominate former Conroe Mayor Webb Melder to represent the county on the Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District Board.
Another item examined was the pending ethics policy to be reviewed during Commissioners Court on Tuesday, touching on items such as nepotism among Montgomery County employees and transparency from all members of the Commissioners Court.
“One of the reasons family businesses fail is because they outgrow their talent pool,” said Commissioner Noack. “For the sake of transparency and fairness, we need a strict policy that states when you are an employee of Montgomery County you cannot hire or appoint any family members.”
